This book is about making books, yes, but it’s about so much more. Anyone who just sees the ‘parts’ of the process, really, is missing the beauty of Gutenberg’s Fingerprint, in my opinion. It’s a love letter to books, to words, to paper, to the Muse, to taking time to revise, to craft things with care, but it’s even more so a love.   Merilyn Simonds has truly given a collection of thoughts to ponder over in her book Gutenberg’s Fingerprint: Paper, Pixels and the Last Impression of Books. This is one of those books I sincerely encourage readers to take their time with and reflect over while perusing the pages.

The concept of the delta may perhaps be clarified by further exposition. Webster furnishes the following definition: "(1) Delta is the name of the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet (equivalent to the English D) from the Phoenician name for the corresponding letter.

The Greeks called the alluvial deposit at the mouth of the Nile, from its shape, the Delta of the Nile. Gutenberg’s Fingerprint trolls the past, present, and evolving future of the book in search of an answer. Part memoir and part philosophical and historical exploration, the book finds its muse in Hugh Barclay, who produces gorgeous books on a hand-operated antique letterpress.

Gutenberg’s Fingerprint posits itself in part as a reflection on the author’s effort to bridge the divide in her mind and heart between print and digital books. Ultimately, this divide evoked in the book’s subtitle proves illusionary, and Simonds notes that “it’s only a matter of time until I move past print and digital to dive headfirst and full-body into whatever lies beyond.”.

As Simonds works alongside this born-again Gutenberg, and with her son to develop a digital edition of the same book, her assumptions about reading, writing, the nature of creativity, and the value of imperfection are erg's Fingerprint is a timely and fascinating book that explores the myths, inventions, and consequences of the digital shift and how we read today.
